Eat Me: Peanut Gallery

by

Oh, nuts.

The Peanut Corporation expanded its recall this Sunday to include all peanut butter and peanut paste (peanut paste?) produced in their Georgia plant since July 1st. So far there have been 470 reports of salmonella, resulting in six deaths attributed to the product. The sicky strain was discovered in an open container of King Nut peanut butter at a long-term care facility in Minnesota. Perhaps making it a short-term care facility?

Everyone will be happy to know that Girl Scout cookies are safe.  But, Little Debbie and Kellogg were among the companies that had to recall products containing potentially nast nut butter. (I’m gonna go track down some Lil’ Deb Debs now; I hear the diarrhea inducing salmonella is almost as good as tapeworms for a fat flush.)

Peter Pan peanut butter claims to be safe since their suppliers are not the Peanut Co. Er, sure. But let’s not forget the ConAgra Foods Inc. snack was linked in 2007 to a salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 625 peeps…so they ain’t no saints. Store bought jarred peanut butter is thought to be safe but it probably wouldn’t kill you to eat the celery sticks without.

Recent salmonella outbreaks have included jalapeno peppers summer 2008 and spinach in 2006. Which can only bring us to the conclusion that our food, like everything else around us, is trying to kill us. Have a nutty day!
