Deep Dish: Gossip Girl Goes Retro

by

I have a major crush on Josh Schwartz (the producer/writer of Gossip Girl, Chuck, and The O.C.) because I love funny Jewish guys and I believe that everything he touches is mostly gold. Once I volunteered to transcribe an interview with him just to listen to his sexy voice. That being said, this new spin-off sounds like maybe a bad idea.

While the Gossip Girl spin-off was  rumored to feature Jenny Humphrey in boarding school, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage have instead decided to focus on one of the least enticing plot points…Lily van der Woodsen, Serena’s mother and old dude love interest numero uno. Old people making out is not one of my favorite things, but since the show will depict young Lily it’s a little better…except you know she’s old now which is kind of like seeing naked honeymoon pictures of your parents…scarring.

Set in 1980’s Los Angeles, the show will begin with Lily moving out of her rich-ass parent’s house in Montecito to live with her outcast sister (who we’ve never heard of) in the Valley. She ditches boarding school for public school and gets all jazzed on Sunset Strip’s excesses and Hollywood glitz. Gossip Girl has done much to allude to Lily’s slutty groupie past…so I guess it might be exciting to see her making out with ’80’s rock stars backstage.

The pilot will air on May 11th in place of Gossip Girl (bummer) and there’s no news of who will play young Lily. Thank God they aren’t just throwing pancake makeup on old Lily (played by Kelly Rutherford) and pretending she’s sixteen, I can’t deal with anymore of this Benjamin Button crap. xoxo, Gossip Girl
