As the World Turns: Whoops…Israel Bombs U.N.

MIDEAST ISRAEL PALESTINIANSThe U.N. takes up a lot of prime international real estate, but come on, Israel, you didn’t have to bomb ’em. The Israeli shells hit the Gaza Strip headquarters Thursday, engulfing the building in flames and burning thousands of pounds of food and supplies meant for Palestinian refugees. Three people were wounded, but there were no casualties.

Ban Ki-Moon, the head of the U.N., was in the region trying to bring the conflict to a close. He was not amused:

“I conveyed my strong protest and outrage to the defense minister and foreign minister and demanded a full explanation…”

Ooooh, Israel’s in trouble. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak apologized saying the shelling was a “grave mistake.”

The war between Israel and Hamas has been raging since December 27, when Israel launched air attacks in response to militant rocket fire from Gaza that was terrorizing Israeli civilians. Since then Israeli troops have been pushing further into Palestinian territories and over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed.

Some have speculated Israel chose this time to engage because Bush is a strong ally and the world has yet to see what Obama will do once he takes office. The President-elect has pledged his support for Israel but others question his commitment. Protests for and against the war are raging around the world and even Osama’s getting in on the action. We have yet to see how American foreign policy will change under the new administration, but we can bet good folks will do their best to ensure a new peace in the region. Let’s hope they don’t get bombed.
