Breakin’: Stalker Appreciation Month

stalkerJanuary is stalker awareness month. Just in time for Jennifer Love Hewitt to obtain a restraining order yesterday against her 62-year-old stalker David Nolte. He wrote violent, sexual letters to Love which detailed impaling the 29-year-old actress…and then sent her two plane tickets to Australia with an itinerary of how they’d spend quality time.

In fact, 3.4 millz Americans believe they have stalkers, according to today’s release by the  U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics.  This seems grossly exaggerated as there are not 3.4 million attractive people in the U.S. to begin with. (Perhaps it’s not just for cute people? Microsoft’s chief exec Steve Ballmer has joked that Yahoo! founder Jerry Yang’s desperation to do a deal means Yang won’t leave Ballmer alone on Facebook…even with repeated denied friend requests.)

While phone-calls remain the top method of stalking, email is gaining in popularity and accounts for 83% of all cyberstalking. One time, I thought I had a cyber stalker but it turns out he just wanted to send me my Nigerian inheritance from this relative I didn’t know I had. Come to think of it, it’s been a long time since I heard back from him. It’s probably just stuck in customs. What are your favorite stalker moments?
